Amelia Earhart: A Girl Who Could Fly

Hello! My name is Amelia. When I was a little girl, I loved big adventures. My sister, Muriel, and I would play outside all day long. We loved to climb tall trees and pretend we were explorers on a great journey. We would imagine we were discovering new and wonderful places. It was so much fun to be brave and explore together. I always looked for new things to see and new games to play.

One day, a long time ago in the year 1920, I saw something amazing in the sky. It was an airplane! It flew way up high and made a buzzing sound, just like a little bee. I watched it zoom across the big blue sky, and my heart felt so happy. Right then, I knew what I wanted to do more than anything else. I had a big dream. My dream was to fly just like that airplane. I wanted to soar high above the clouds and see the world from up above.

When I got older, I took my very first ride in an airplane. Wow! The ground looked so small from way up high. The houses looked like tiny toy blocks, and the fields were like a green blanket. I felt like a bird, free and happy in the sky. I knew right away that this is where I belonged. A kind teacher named Neta Snook showed me how to fly all by myself. It was so exciting!

Soon, I saved up all my money and bought my own airplane. It was painted a bright, sunny yellow, so I named it 'The Canary,' just like the little yellow bird. Flying The Canary was my favorite thing to do. I would take off into the air and soar above the clouds. Sometimes I would do loop-the-loops and fun tricks in the sky. It was the best feeling in the world to be up there, just me and my beautiful yellow plane.

I went on many amazing adventures in my airplane. My biggest adventure was when I became the first woman to fly all by myself across the big, wide ocean. It felt so good to be brave and do something no one thought I could do. My greatest adventure of all was my final flight, when I tried to fly all the way around the whole world. I wanted to see everything! I hope my story shows you that the most important thing is to be brave, follow your dreams, and never, ever stop exploring your wonderful world.
