A Story by Dr. Seuss

Hello there. My name is Theodor Geisel, but you can call me Ted. You might know me by another name, Dr. Seuss. I was born a long, long time ago, on March 2nd, 1904. When I was a little boy, I loved to draw. I did not draw regular things. I drew silly, wonderful creatures all over my bedroom walls. I also loved making up funny words that rhymed. It was my favorite thing to do.

When I grew up, I put my drawings and rhymes into books for children just like you. My very first book was called 'And to Think That I Saw It on Mulberry Street,' and it was made in the year 1937. One of my most famous friends is a tall cat who wears a red-and-white striped hat. I wrote 'The Cat in the Hat' in 1957. I wanted to show everyone that learning to read could be lots of fun. I used simple words so that new readers could giggle while they learned.

I filled my books with many funny friends. There was Horton the elephant, the grumpy Grinch, and Sam-I-Am, who loved his green eggs and ham. I loved making worlds where silly things could happen. I wrote and drew for many years, and I lived to be 87 years old. My rhymes and my funny friends still live in books all around the world, helping kids learn to read. Remember, 'The more that you read, the more things you will know. The more that you learn, the more places you'll go!'
