Florence Nightingale

Hello! My name is Florence. I was born a long, long time ago, in the year 1820. My family named me after a beautiful, sunny city in Italy called Florence. Even when I was a little girl, my heart was full of kindness. I loved taking care of things. If a little bird fell from its nest or one of our pets was feeling sick, I would be the first one there. I would gently wrap it in a warm blanket and give it a cozy place to rest until it felt all better.

As I grew up, my biggest dream was to become a nurse. I wanted to spend all my days helping people who were sick or hurt. I wanted to make them feel safe and comfortable. In those days, it was a bit unusual for someone like me to want to be a nurse, but I knew in my heart it was what I was meant to do. I wanted to learn everything I could. So, in the year 1850, I went to a special school to learn all about how to be the very best nurse I could be.

Later, I heard about many brave soldiers who were hurt in a faraway place. They needed help. In 1854, I traveled there with other kind nurses. The hospital was not a very nice place at first. It was dark and not very clean. But I knew just what to do! We scrubbed the floors until they shined. We opened the windows to let in fresh air and sunshine. We made sure everyone had clean blankets and warm food to eat. Every night, I would walk through the long, quiet rooms, carrying a little lamp. Its gentle light helped me see as I checked on each soldier to make sure they were sleeping peacefully. They started calling me 'The Lady with the Lamp.' It made me so happy to know they felt cared for.

When I came home, I didn't stop working. I wanted everyone to know how to help people get better. I opened special schools to teach other people how to be wonderful nurses, just like my friends and me. I showed everyone that keeping things clean and being kind can help people feel healthy and strong. My life's lesson is that a little bit of care and a loving heart can make a very big difference in the world.
