The Story of Dr. Seuss

Hello there. My name is Ted, but my friends all call me Dr. Seuss. I was born a long, long time ago on March 2nd, 1904. When I was a little boy, I loved to draw. I had a big pencil and lots of paper. My dad worked at a zoo, and I saw so many wonderful animals. I saw elephants with long trunks and lions with fluffy manes. I would go home and draw my own silly creatures. I drew wiggly, giggly animals all over my bedroom walls. They had long necks and funny feet. Drawing made me so happy. It felt like making brand new friends on paper. I loved creating a world full of wonderful, wacky animals that came right from my imagination.

When I grew up, I thought that reading books should be super fun. I wanted to make books that made children giggle and smile. So, I started to write my own stories and draw my own pictures to go with them. In 1937, I wrote my very first book for children. It was called 'And to Think That I Saw It on Mulberry Street'. It was about all the amazing things a boy could imagine seeing. Later on, a friend asked me to write a book using only a few easy words for new readers. That sounded like a fun challenge. So, in 1957, a tall cat with a red and white hat popped into my head. That is how 'The Cat in the Hat' came to be. It was so much fun to rhyme words like 'cat' and 'hat' and 'sat'. I loved making words dance on the page.

I kept writing and drawing for many, many years. I created worlds full of wonderful characters, like a grumpy green Grinch and a silly friend named Sam-I-Am who loved green eggs and ham. I believe that books are magical. They can take you on amazing adventures without ever leaving your room. I grew very old and then I passed away, but my stories live on to make children happy. Always remember, the more that you read, the more things you will know. The more that you learn, the more places you'll go.
