The World's Beautiful Mix-Up
Have you ever noticed that no two snowflakes are exactly the same? Or that a garden can be filled with red roses, yellow sunflowers, and purple lavender all at once? I'm the reason for that. I paint the wings of butterflies with different patterns and give every bird its own special song. I’m in the food you eat, from sweet, red strawberries to crunchy, green carrots. I’m also there when you look at your friends. Some have curly hair, some have straight hair. Some have eyes the color of the sky, and others have eyes as warm as chocolate. People in your neighborhood might speak different languages, celebrate different holidays, or tell different bedtime stories. That’s me, making the world a big, beautiful, interesting place. I am the magic in being different. I am Diversity.
For a long, long time, people just saw me without really knowing my name. They saw me in the forests and oceans, filled with so many kinds of plants and animals. One person who helped everyone understand me better was a scientist named Charles Darwin. A long time ago, he sailed on a ship called the HMS Beagle to faraway islands. He saw birds called finches that looked similar but had different beaks to help them eat different foods. He saw giant tortoises with different shell shapes on each island. He realized that all these little differences were super important. They helped each animal live its best life in its special home. On November 24th, 1859, he shared his ideas in a famous book. People also started to see how important I was for them, too. They learned that when people with different ideas and from different places work together, they can build amazing things and solve tricky problems, like putting together a puzzle where every unique piece is needed to see the big picture.
Today, I am more celebrated than ever. Think of me like a giant box of crayons. If you only had one color, your pictures would be okay, but with all the colors—blue, green, orange, pink, and sparkly gold—you can create a masterpiece. That's what I do for the world. I make life a masterpiece. I help you learn new things from your friends, taste yummy foods from around the world, and hear music that makes you want to dance in a new way. When you welcome someone who is different from you, you are welcoming me. So look for me everywhere. Celebrate the different colors, shapes, sounds, and ideas you find. The more we mix all our special sparkles together, the brighter our world will shine.
