A Helper Called Fractions

Imagine you have a big, yummy pizza, hot from the oven. How do you share it with your three best friends so everyone gets the same amount? That’s where I come in. I’m a secret helper for fairness. I help you see the whole pizza as different parts. One part for you, one for your friend, one for another, and one for the last one. I do the same thing with a long chocolate bar. If you want to share it with your brother, I help you find the perfect spot to snap it in two, so you both get a piece that is exactly the same size. I am the idea that helps you understand a 'part of a whole thing'. I make sure sharing is equal and everyone is happy. I love seeing smiles when everyone gets their fair piece of a yummy treat.

My story is very, very old. Let’s travel in our imaginations way back in time, thousands of years ago, to the sunny land of ancient Egypt. The people there were amazing builders who made giant pyramids, and they were also very clever farmers. They lived along the banks of a giant, powerful river called the Nile. Every single year, the Nile River would do something incredible but messy—it would flood. Whoosh. A huge wave of water would cover all the farmland along the river, washing away all the little fences and markers that showed whose farm was whose. When the water finally went down, it left behind wonderful, rich mud that was perfect for planting crops. But it was also a big jumble. The farmers would scratch their heads and wonder, "How can we divide our land back up fairly?" It was a huge puzzle. That’s when they called for my help. I was the idea that helped them measure the big piece of land and split it back into equal parts for everyone. I made sure each farmer got their correct piece back, so no one had too little or too much. It was a very important job. The Egyptians were so happy to have my help that they gave me a special name. The Egyptians called me Fractions. That's me. I was their secret for making things fair and square, even after a giant flood.

My adventures in Egypt were just the beginning. Even though I’m ancient, I am all around you today. You probably use me every day without even thinking about it. Have you ever helped bake cookies? When the recipe says you need one-half a cup of sugar, that’s me. I’m helping you use just the right part of a whole cup. When you look at a clock and someone says it’s a "quarter past three," that’s me again. I’m helping you split the hour into four parts so you know exactly what time it is. I even sneak into your music class. A half note tells a musician how long to hold a sound—it’s one part of a whole measure of music. So you see, I’m not just for dividing up land or pizza. I’m in your kitchen, on your clock, and in your favorite songs. I am a friendly, helpful part of the world of numbers, and my job is to help make everything from food to time make perfect sense.
