Just want Place value?
Have you ever wondered why the number ‘2’ in 25 feels so different from the ‘2’ in 52. It’s the same shape, the same digit, but one means twenty and the other means just two. How can that be. It’s because of a secret rule, a kind of magic that I give to numbers. Think of numbers as a team. On this team, every player’s position gives them a special job. A digit standing in the first spot on the right is on the ‘ones’ team. The next spot to the left is the ‘tens’ team, and the next is the ‘hundreds’ team, and so on. A ‘9’ in the tens place is like the team captain, with the power of ninety. But that same ‘9’ in the ones place is just a regular player, with the power of nine. I am the secret that gives digits their power based on where they stand in line. I make numbers organized and strong. I am Place Value.
Can you imagine a world without me. It was a very clumsy and confusing place. Long ago, the ancient Romans didn't have me to help them. If they wanted to write the number thirty-seven, they had to scribble a long, clunky code: XXXVII. Imagine trying to add that to another number. It was a huge puzzle of rearranging letters and symbols. This was because each of their symbols, like X for ten or I for one, had only one fixed value no matter where it stood. It was like having a team where every player could only do one thing. Then, in a land called Babylonia, some very clever people had a brilliant idea. They realized that a symbol’s position could change its meaning. It was a fantastic start, the first step toward creating me. But their team was still missing a very important, and very humble, hero to make their system truly work.

But their team was still missing a very important, and very humble, hero to make their system truly work.
That hero is my best friend, Zero. You might think Zero just means ‘nothing,’ but that’s its biggest secret. Zero’s most important job is to be a ‘placeholder.’ It’s the bravest player on the team. For example, in the number 304, my friend Zero stands proudly in the tens place. It holds that spot to make sure everyone knows there are no tens, so the ‘3’ stays in the powerful hundreds place where it belongs. Without Zero holding that spot, 304 would shrink into 34, and that’s a huge difference. For a long time, nobody understood Zero’s true power. But then, brilliant mathematicians in India finally figured it out. Around the 7th century, a wise man named Brahmagupta wrote down the official rules for how Zero and I work together to make counting simple and clear. Our system was so amazing that a famous scholar from Persia, Muhammad ibn Musa al-Khwarizmi, helped share our story with the rest of the world, and people everywhere were thrilled to finally have an easy way to count.
Today, I am everywhere, working silently to make your world make sense. You use me when you count your birthday money, figuring out the difference between a one-dollar bill and a ten-dollar bill. You see me when you read the score of a basketball game, knowing that 102 points is much, much more than 21. Even the computer or tablet you might be using right now depends on me. Computers use a special version of me called the binary system, which uses only my best friend, Zero, and the number one to run everything from games to videos. My story has a special message for you. Just as every digit’s position gives it a special value, every single person has a special place in the world where they can make a big difference. So always remember the power of being in the right place, ready to show your value.
