I Am a Map

Have you ever wanted to find a hidden treasure chest or just the fastest way to the playground. Imagine holding the whole wide world in your hands. You could see giant, pointy mountains, long, wiggly rivers, and busy cities with tiny little streets, all on a flat piece of paper or a bright, shiny screen. I can be your secret guide, showing you paths you’ve never seen and places you’ve only dreamed of visiting. I can take you on an adventure without you even leaving your room. What am I. I am a Map.

Long, long ago, before I existed, people had to get around by remembering clues from nature. They would look for a funny-shaped rock, a big, twisty tree, or follow the twinkling stars in the night sky. It was tricky. The very first versions of me were not on paper at all. Thousands of years ago in a place called Babylonia, people scratched me into wet clay tablets and let them dry in the sun. I was a simple picture of their land. As time went on, people got much more adventurous. Brave explorers started sailing in big wooden ships across giant, mysterious oceans, and they needed my help more than ever. The problem was, the Earth is round like a ball, but I was flat like a pancake. A very clever mapmaker named Gerardus Mercator had a brilliant idea. In 1569, he figured out a special way to draw the round world onto a flat piece of paper. It was like trying to flatten an orange peel without it ripping. His work was so important because it let sailors draw straight lines on me to follow to faraway lands, which made their long journeys much safer.

Today, my adventures continue, but I look a little different. I live inside your family’s car and in your parents’ phones. I can even talk with a friendly voice, telling you to “turn left in 200 feet.” I help with all sorts of things, from small everyday tasks like finding the closest pizza place when you’re super hungry, to planning big family road trips across the country. Have you ever seen that little blinking dot that follows you as you move. That’s me, showing you exactly where you are and shouting, “You Are Here.” I may look like just a bunch of lines, colors, and words, but I am so much more. I am a tool for exploration, a way to feel safe when you are somewhere new, and a promise that there is always a new adventure waiting just around the corner. And I will always be here to help you find it.
