The Line That Hugs Everything

I am the line that goes all the way around something. I am like a big, warm hug for your favorite things. You can find me everywhere. I am the bumpy crust on your pizza slice that you love to nibble. I am the fence around your backyard that keeps your puppy safe and sound. When you draw a line around your hand to make a turkey picture for Thanksgiving, that's me. I am the edge of everything, keeping it all cozy and together. I love being the line that goes around and around.

My name is Perimeter. That's a big word, but I'm a very simple idea. A long, long time ago, farmers needed my help. In a sunny place called Ancient Egypt, a big river would bring lots of water every year. Sometimes the water would wash away the lines around their farms. The farmers would take long ropes and walk all the way around their fields to measure them again. They were measuring me. By walking all the way around, they knew where their farm started and where it ended. I helped them make sure everyone had their own special spot to grow yummy food to eat.

Today, you can find me everywhere you look. I am not hiding. When you run all the way around the playground, you are running along my path. When you put a shiny, colorful ribbon around a birthday present, you are using me to make it look pretty and special. I help you know how big things are on the outside. I am the line that holds all the shapes together, like squares and circles. I am Perimeter, and I love helping you measure the wonderful world all around you.
