A Story of the Rectangle
I have four straight sides and four corners that are perfectly square, like the corners of a comic book. You see me everywhere. I am the shape of a yummy chocolate bar, a big window looking out at the rain, and the front door to your house. I hold your colorful drawings on the refrigerator with a magnet, and I am the screen you use to watch your favorite shows. Sometimes my sides are all the same length, and then I have a special name, a Square. But most of the time, two of my sides are long and two are short. Have you guessed who I am? I am a Rectangle.
I have been helping people for a long, long time, even before they had a name for me. In a place called ancient Mesopotamia, thousands of years ago, people saw how useful I was. They shaped wet clay into my form to create special tablets for writing. They etched some of the very first stories and rules onto my flat surface. Then, in ancient Egypt, builders realized that making bricks in my shape was a brilliant, or super smart, idea. My opposite sides are always the same length, which means I stack perfectly without wobbling. They used me to build strong houses for families and even the giant, amazing pyramids that reached for the sky. I was the perfect building block, strong and steady.
Today, I am still one of the busiest and most helpful shapes. I am the pages in the books you read, the money your parents use at the store, and the shape of the field where you play soccer. I help keep things neat and tidy. Think of me like a perfect frame for a picture you have drawn. I hold your beautiful art so everyone can see it clearly. Whenever you build with blocks, open a book, or look out a window, remember me. I am the Rectangle, and I am here to help you build, create, and frame your wonderful world.
