Square

Imagine a shape with four sides. Not just any sides, but four sides that are all exactly the same length, like four best friends holding hands so no one is left out. I also have four corners, and each one is a perfect, pointy 'L' shape, not tilted or wobbly at all. You can find me everywhere if you just look. I am the window you look through to watch the rain, the yummy cracker you dip in your soup, and the squares on a checkerboard where you place your pieces. You might even be sitting on a cushion shaped just like me. I am steady and strong, a shape you can always count on to be fair and even. What am I? I am a Square. It’s so lovely to finally introduce myself.

A long, long, long time ago, way before there were cars or video games, people discovered just how special I am. In ancient lands with hot sun and big rivers, like Egypt and Mesopotamia, people were learning how to build things that would last. They had a problem. They needed to build strong homes that wouldn't fall over, and they had to divide their farmland fairly so every family got an equal piece to grow their food. They looked at me and had a wonderful 'aha.' moment. They realized my four equal sides and perfect corners made me super reliable, like a good friend you can always count on. Because all my sides are the same, I was perfect for measuring. They used me to plan whole cities with straight streets that were easy to walk down without getting lost. They also used me to build some of the most amazing things in the world, like the giant pyramids. If you could see a pyramid from the bottom, you’d see it sits on a huge, strong square base. That’s me, holding it all up. Back then, they didn’t have fancy rulers, so they figured out how to make me using special knotted ropes to get my corners perfectly pointy. I helped them create a world that felt organized, safe, and fair for everyone.

Today, I'm busier than ever. You might not even notice me, but I'm everywhere, helping you every day. Look very closely at the screen you're reading this on—it's made of millions of tiny little lights called pixels. And guess what shape each pixel is? They're me. Teeny, tiny little squares all working together to create all the colorful pictures and fun games you see. I’m also a star in the world of art. An artist named Piet Mondrian loved me so much that he used me in his famous paintings. He would paint big and small squares with bright, happy colors like red, yellow, and blue to create beautiful patterns. I'm in the tiles on your kitchen floor, the pages of your favorite books, and even the delicious chocolate bar you might share with a friend, broken into perfect little squares. I am a building block for so many great ideas because I am simple, strong, and fair.
