Rectangle

I am the shape of the book you read last night and the big, bright screen you watch your favorite movies on. I am the front door to your house and the cozy rug on your bedroom floor. Sometimes, two of my sides are long and two are short, and sometimes all four of my sides are exactly the same length, making me a perfect square. My most important feature is my corners. Every single one is a perfect, sharp corner, like the edge of a brand-new box of crayons. You can stack me up high to build towers, and you can lay me side-by-side with my friends to cover a floor without leaving any little gaps. I am steady, reliable, and I am almost everywhere you look. Can you guess who I am. I am the Rectangle.

For thousands of years, people saw me everywhere in nature and in the things they built, but they didn't have a special name for my skills. Then, clever people in ancient lands like Mesopotamia and Egypt realized just how helpful I could be. Imagine you are a farmer living by the great Nile River. Every year, a big flood would come and wash away the markers that showed where your land ended and your neighbor’s began. It was a huge problem. But the farmers figured out that by using ropes pulled tight, they could create my shape. They made sure every plot of land had four straight sides and four of my perfect corners. This way, everything was fair and everyone got the right amount of land. They also used me to build amazing things. My special cousin, the Square, became the strong base for the Great Pyramid of Giza, helping it stand tall for over four thousand years. Much later, a very smart man in ancient Greece named Euclid decided it was time to write down the official rules for all the shapes. Around the year 300 BCE, he wrote a famous book called 'Elements'. In it, he gave everyone a clear recipe for me. He wrote that a rectangle must have four sides and four right angles—those perfect corners. He didn’t invent me, but he made sure everyone, everywhere, understood exactly what I was.

Today, I am busier than ever before. Just look around you. I am the bright screen of your tablet, bringing you games and stories from all over the world. I am the crisp, clean paper you draw your masterpieces on, the flag that flies for your country, and the window you look through to see the sunshine or the falling rain. Artists use me to put a beautiful frame around their paintings, and architects use me to design enormous skyscrapers that seem to touch the clouds. Why am I still so popular after all this time. It is because I am practical. I am easy to measure, simple to cut, and perfect for stacking. I help bring order and structure to our world.
