My Yearly Dance
Sometimes, I paint the world white and sparkly. I tickle your nose with tiny, cold snowflakes and make you want to snuggle up with a warm cup of cocoa. Then, just when you’re used to your cozy mittens, I wake up the sleepy flowers and help baby birds sing their first songs. I warm up the world so you can splash in puddles. After that, I turn up the sunshine so you can run through sprinklers and eat yummy, drippy popsicles on a hot day. And before you know it, I send a cool breeze to help you fly a kite and I paint the leaves red and yellow, making them fun to crunch under your feet. Do you know who I am? I am the Seasons.
For a long, long, long time, people have watched me dance. At first, they just noticed how I changed everything. They saw that after the chilly, sleepy time, the sun always came back to warm the earth. They learned to plant yummy vegetables when I brought the gentle spring rain and to gather cozy nuts and berries when I made the air crisp in autumn. They realized I wasn't just a random surprise, but a big, beautiful circle that repeats every year. They called my different dances Spring, Summer, Autumn, and Winter. By watching me, they learned how to grow food, when to store it, and how to get ready for all my different moods.
Today, you know my dance, too. You know when to build a snowman, when to look for rainbows, when to swim in the pool, and when to jump in big piles of leaves. I bring special holidays and your favorite foods, from summer strawberries to autumn pumpkins. I love changing because it means there is always something new and exciting to do. I help the world rest, grow, play, and get ready to start all over again. What new adventure will we have together next?
