A Story of Light
I peek through your window in the morning to wake you up with a sunny hello. After it rains, I love to stretch across the sky, painting a beautiful rainbow for everyone to see. I help the tiny seeds in the garden feel my warmth so they can grow into big, strong flowers. I am super speedy. I travel from the big, bright Sun all the way to your home on Earth in just about eight minutes, which is faster than any rocket ship. I let you see your friend’s happy smile, the bright colors of a butterfly’s wings, and the words in your very favorite book. Can you guess who I am? I am Light. It is so nice to meet you.
For a very long, long time, people knew I was here, but they didn't understand my secrets. They felt my warmth when they played outside and used me to see in the dark with flickering fires. Then, a very curious man named Sir Isaac Newton wanted to know more about me. Way back around the year 1666, on a sunny day, he did a special experiment. He used a special triangle made of glass, called a prism. He let a little bit of me shine through it. And guess what happened? Poof. I magically split into all the colors of the rainbow: red, orange, yellow, green, blue, and violet. Isaac showed everyone that I am not just plain white light. I am really a whole team of colors working together to make the world bright. Many years later, another super smart person named Albert Einstein thought about me. On a special day in 1905, he figured out my biggest secret of all. He realized that nothing, absolutely nothing, can travel faster than me. I am the speed champion of the whole universe.
Today, you use me in so many amazing ways that Isaac and Albert could only dream about. I travel through tiny, shiny threads made of glass, called fiber optics. These threads carry me under oceans and across lands to bring cartoons and video calls right to your screens. I help doctors take special pictures to see inside your body and make sure you are healthy and strong. Artists use me to mix the perfect paint colors for their paintings, and photographers use me to capture happy memories, like your birthday party, in a picture that lasts forever. Every time you see a bright yellow dandelion, watch a movie on a big screen, or just feel the warm sun on a happy day, that is me at work. I am here to help you see all the beauty in the world, to help you learn new things, and to help you share your own bright ideas with everyone. So the next time you see a sunbeam dancing in your room, remember me, and know that I am helping to make your world a brighter place.
