The Weeping Woman

A Painting of Feelings

Look at me. I am a painting full of bright colors and pointy shapes. My face is green and yellow. My hair is blue and black. Do you see the tears rolling down my cheeks. They look like little raindrops. In my hands, I am holding a little white handkerchief, all crumpled up because I am crying so much. My mouth is open and my teeth look sharp and pointy because I feel a very big, sad feeling inside. All my colors and all my shapes are put together to show you this feeling. My pointy parts show how much it hurts to be sad. I am a picture of a very sad day. I am The Weeping Woman.

The Man with the Paintbrush

A man with a big imagination made me. His name was Pablo Picasso, and he loved to paint. One day, a long time ago in the year 1937, Pablo heard about something very sad happening far away. It made people feel hurt and scared, and it made him feel very sad, too. He wanted to paint that big, sad feeling so everyone could see it. He wanted to show that it is important to care when others are hurting. He had a friend named Dora who sometimes had sad eyes. He looked at her face and thought about all the sad feelings in the world, and then he picked up his brushes and painted me.

Colors Can Tell a Story

Now, I live in a big, quiet place called a museum. People come from all over to look at me. They see my bright colors and my sharp tears. I show them that it is okay to feel sad sometimes. Everyone feels sad. My colors tell a story without using any words. They show that a big feeling can be shared with a painting. Art can help us understand our own feelings and the feelings of our friends, and that helps us all be a little kinder to each other.
