I Am the Water Lilies
Can you imagine being a puddle of color. Not just one color, but a whole pond full of them. Swishy blues melt into soft pinks, and sleepy greens float all around. I am made of sunshine that sparkles on the water and the cool, dark shadows underneath the leaves. A painter’s brush danced all over me, leaving little dabs of thick paint that make the light shimmer and glow. Sometimes I am a bright, happy morning, full of yellow sunlight. Other times, I am a quiet, purple evening, when the world is getting ready for bed. I am not just one painting, you see. I have hundreds of sisters, each one showing the same pond but on a different day or at a different time. We all look a little bit different, but we are a family. Together, we are the Water Lilies.
The man who made me was named Claude Monet. He was a kind man with a big, fluffy white beard and eyes that crinkled when he smiled. He loved gardens more than anything. Around the year 1900, he decided to build his own perfect world in a place called Giverny in France. He dug a big pond and filled it with water lilies. He even built a beautiful green bridge that arched over the water, just like in a fairy tale. Every day, Claude would bring his easel and his paints and sit by the pond. He watched how the morning sun made the water sparkle and how the afternoon clouds made my colors soft and hazy. He painted me again and again, trying to capture each special moment. As he got older, his eyes grew tired and saw the world in a blurry, beautiful way. That just made my colors swirl together even more, making me look like a wonderful dream.
Today, some of my most famous sisters and I live in a museum in Paris. We are not just hanging on a flat wall. We live in special, curved rooms that are shaped like circles. When you walk inside, we surround you like a big, gentle hug of color. It feels like you have jumped right into the cool, quiet water of Claude’s pond. This was his gift to the world. After a very long war ended in 1918, he wanted to give people a place to feel calm and peaceful, a place where their minds could rest. He wanted to share the quiet magic he found in his garden. I hold that peaceful feeling for everyone to see. I show people how a simple pond filled with flowers can be one of the most beautiful things in the world, reminding them to always look for a little bit of wonder.
