Abraham Lincoln and the Big Family Argument
Hello. My name is Abraham Lincoln, and a long time ago, I was the president. Being president was like being the dad of a very big country family. Our family was called the United States of America. We all lived together in one big home. But one day, our family started to have a big, big argument. Some of my family members who lived in the South wanted to leave and start their own family with different rules. This made me feel very sad in my heart. I wanted our whole family to stay together.
The argument got very loud and was a very hard time for everyone. I lived in a big white house, and my job was to help our family fix the argument. Every single day, I worked so hard to bring everyone back together. I would sit at my big desk and write lots of letters with my special pen. I would talk to many, many people, in my tall black hat. I told them, "We are one big family. We are stronger when we are together." I wanted everyone to be treated fairly and with kindness, no matter what. It was very important to me that we all remembered how to be good to one another and help each other, just like a real family should.
After a long, long time, the fighting and arguing finally stopped. Hooray. Our country family decided to stay together as one. We promised to be kinder and fairer to every single person in our big family. We learned that even after a big disagreement, we could be strong and happy again. It is so important to always listen to each other. It is so important to always help one another. A family that sticks together is the strongest family of all.
