Dr. Salk's Big Idea
Hello, my name is Dr. Jonas Salk. A long, long time ago, there was a big worry. A sickness called polio was making many children feel weak. It made it hard for them to run and jump and play outside with their friends. Seeing children who couldn't play made me feel very sad in my heart. I am a doctor, and doctors love to help people feel better. I knew I had to do something. I wanted to find a way to stop this sickness so that every child could be strong and healthy. I decided I would work very, very hard to find a special medicine to keep everyone safe and happy.
So, I went to my special room called a laboratory, or lab for short. It was a very busy place. Imagine a room filled with shiny glass bottles and tubes holding liquids of all different colors, like a rainbow. Swish, swish, bubble, bubble. I wasn't alone. I had a wonderful team of helpers, and together, we worked like we were solving a giant puzzle. Day after day, we would mix and mash and look for clues. I had a super-duper magnifying glass called a microscope. I would peek through it to see things that were teeny-tiny, so small you couldn't see them with just your eyes. We were looking for the tricky little germ that caused polio. Our big idea was to find a way to teach everyone's body how to be a superhero and fight off that germ before it could ever make them sick. It took a lot of thinking and trying, but we never gave up.
And then, one very special day came. It was April 12th, 1955. That was the day we told everyone the wonderful news. We did it. We had found the special medicine, a vaccine, to stop polio. Hooray. All around the world, people cheered and clapped their hands. Moms and dads hugged their children tight. It was a big, happy party because now, children could run and play and not worry about that silly sickness anymore. I felt so happy inside, like a sunshine was glowing in my tummy. My work showed that when we work together and keep trying, even when a problem is very big, we can find a way to help each other and make the world a healthier, happier place for everyone.
