Squanto's Thankful Meal

Hello, I'm Squanto. It is nice to meet you. One day, I saw a very big boat sailing on the big, blue water. It was called the Mayflower. So many new people came off the boat. I learned their name was the Pilgrims. They were my new neighbors. But my new neighbors looked very cold and very hungry from their long, long trip. They did not know how to find food in this new home. I watched them from the woods and my heart felt sad for them. I wanted to help my new friends feel warm and happy in their new home. I knew just what to do to help them feel better.

I decided to be brave and go say hello. I was a little nervous, but I knew it was the right thing to do. I showed them the best places in the forest to find yummy red berries and crunchy nuts. Then I showed them a special secret for growing food. I taught them how to plant tiny corn seeds in the dirt. We put a little fish next to each seed. The fish helped the corn grow up big and tall and strong. We worked together every day, digging and planting and watching our garden grow. It was fun to work with my new friends. We smiled and laughed a lot.

When the autumn came in the year 1621, our gardens were full of yummy food. The corn was bright yellow, and the pumpkins were big and orange. We had so much food to eat. To celebrate, we all had a big meal together. We cooked turkey and corn and squash. Everyone sat together, my Pilgrim friends and my people, and we shared all the delicious food. It made my heart feel so happy to see everyone smiling and full. We were so thankful for our food and for our new friends. Sharing and helping each other is the best feeling in the world.
