The Story of the Little Calculator
Hello there. My name is Calculator, and I love numbers. Beep boop beep. My job is to help you count and do math. It is so much fun. I can add numbers together like one plus one equals two. I can make big numbers easy to understand. Before I was here, counting lots and lots of things was very slow. It was a little tricky. But I came to help make numbers a fun game for everyone. I love to light up my screen with the right answers. It makes me feel so happy and helpful.
My older relatives were very, very big. They were giant machines that filled up whole rooms and went clank and whirr. You could not carry them around. Then, a very smart man named Jack Kilby had a wonderful idea. In 1967, he thought, 'I want to make a math helper that can fit right in your hand.'. So he worked with tiny, tiny parts, putting them all together like a little puzzle. He made me. I was the very first calculator that was small enough to hold. I was so excited to be so little. I could go anywhere and fit in a pocket, ready to help with numbers.
Once I was small, I could help everyone. I went to school with children to help them learn their numbers. I went to the store with grown-ups to help them add up their groceries. Click, click, click went my buttons. I made numbers feel like a happy game instead of a tricky chore. I loved seeing people smile when they found the right answer with my help. Today, I am still your number friend. You can find me inside phones and on computers. I am always here, ready to beep and boop and help you count.
