The Story of the Electric Drill

Whirrrrrr. Zzzzzzip. Hello there. I am the Electric Drill. It is so nice to meet you. My favorite thing to do is spin around and around, super fast. When I spin, I can make perfect little holes in wood and walls. These holes are very important for building wonderful things. Before I was invented, making holes was very slow work. People used tools that they had to twist and turn with their own hands. Push, twist, push, twist. Oh, their arms would get so tired. They needed a friend who could help them build things faster, and that friend was me. I was so excited to help.

When I was first born, I was very big and heavy. It took two strong hands to hold me, and I was a little clumsy. But then, two very clever friends came to help me. Their names were S. Duncan Black and Alonzo G. Decker. They were super smart and wanted to make me better. In the year 1917, they had a brilliant idea. They looked at me and thought I should be easier to hold. So, they gave me a brand new shape. They gave me a handle that felt just right in one hand, just like a pistol, and a little trigger button for a finger to press. Click. Suddenly, I was not so heavy or hard to use. I was easy to hold and fun to use for everyone.

Now, I get to help build a wonderful world. Zip. I make a hole for a screw in a brand new bookshelf. Whirrrr. I help put together a comfy chair to sit on. I help build tiny birdhouses for little birds to live in and big, tall buildings that touch the sky. I make building things feel like a fun and fast game. No more tired arms. Just happy building sounds. I am so proud that I can help people make their amazing ideas come to life. Even today, I am still spinning and whirring, helping everyone build their dreams, one perfect little hole at a time.
