Hello there. I am the magical box in your kitchen. My name is the Microwave Oven. I have a very special job. When your food is cold, I make it warm and yummy. I go hummmm and my light turns on. It’s like a little light show just for your food. In just a little minute, your soup is warm and your pizza is ready. It is so fast. But do you know how I was made? It was a happy, sweet accident that happened a long, long time ago. A very sweet surprise.

A very clever man named Percy Spencer helped make me. One day, a long, long time ago in 1945, he was working with a big machine that made special waves. He didn't know it, but he had a yummy chocolate bar in his pocket. While he was working, he felt something warm and gooey. He reached into his pocket and what did he find? His chocolate bar had melted into a sweet, sticky puddle. It was a big surprise. He wasn't sad about the chocolate. He was excited. This sweet, gooey surprise gave Percy a wonderful, brilliant idea. What if these waves could warm up other foods too?

So, what did Percy try next? Popcorn. He put some little popcorn kernels near his machine. And then, pop. Pop. Pop. The kernels started to dance and jump and turn into fluffy white popcorn. It was so exciting. Percy knew he had discovered something amazing. That is how I was born. At first, I was very, very big, as tall as a grown-up. But now, I am just the right size to sit in your kitchen. I love to help your family have warm food quickly so you have more time to play together.
