The story

The Magical Melty Surprise

Hello there! My name is Microwave, and I live in your kitchen. Have you ever been so super-duper hungry that you wished your food could be ready in a flash? Well, that's my specialty! I love to warm up yummy pizza, heat a cozy bowl of soup, or make your leftovers taste delicious all over again. When I'm finished with my work, I make a happy "BEEP BEEP!" sound to let you know your treat is ready to eat. It might seem like magic how I warm things up so fast, but my story, the story of the Microwave Oven, all started with a very surprising and sweet accident a long time ago.

I wasn't always a neat little box sitting on a kitchen counter. My story began way back in 1945 in a laboratory full of interesting gadgets and gizmos. A very clever man named Percy Spencer was working there. He wasn't trying to invent me at all! He was busy working with a special machine part called a magnetron. This magnetron made powerful, invisible energy waves that were used for something called radar, which helped airplanes and ships see in the dark. One day, while he was standing near the machine, he felt something funny in his pocket. He reached inside and pulled out his hand, which was covered in a gooey, melty, chocolatey puddle! A chocolate bar he had been saving for a snack had completely melted. "How did that happen?" he wondered. The room wasn't hot. He realized the invisible waves from the magnetron must have cooked his candy bar right inside his pocket! It was a sweet, melty surprise.

Percy was so curious! He wanted to see what else these invisible waves could do. So, he decided to try another experiment. He went and got some hard, tiny popcorn kernels and placed them near the magnetron. Can you guess what happened next? POP! POP! POP! The kernels started jumping and dancing, exploding into fluffy white popcorn that flew all over the lab. It was like a mini firework show! That's when Percy understood my secret. My special waves make the tiny bits of water inside food wiggle and jiggle and dance around super-fast. All that dancing creates heat, which cooks the food from the inside out. I was the very first machine that could cook food with this amazing inside-out dancing trick!

At first, I was not small and friendly like I am today. The very first me, built in 1947, was called the "Radarange," and I was as tall and heavy as a refrigerator! I was way too big for a kitchen. But Percy and his friends knew I could be a great helper for families. So, over many years, lots of smart people worked hard to make me smaller, safer, and easier to use. Finally, I became the perfect size to sit on your counter. Now, I get to live in homes all over the world, and I couldn't be happier. My cheerful "BEEP!" means a warm meal is ready, giving your family more time to talk, laugh, and play together.
