The Airplane's First Flight

Have you ever looked way up high into the big blue sky and seen a silver airplane? It soars like a giant bird, with big wings and a rumbling sound. From way up there, houses look like tiny blocks and cars look like little bugs crawling on the ground. A long, long time ago, people could only watch the birds and dream about flying. This is the story of how that dream came true, with a wonderful invention called the airplane.

There were once two brothers named Orville and Wilbur Wright. They loved to watch birds swoop and glide on the wind. 'Wouldn't it be amazing to fly like that?' they thought. So, in their little bicycle shop, they started to build a flying machine. They used wood and cloth to make two long, wide wings. They added a little engine and a propeller that could spin round and round. One windy day, they took their invention, the Wright Flyer, out to a big, sandy hill. Orville lay down on the bottom wing. The engine rumbled, and the propeller went whirr, whirr, whirr. The machine started to move. It bumped along the ground, and then... it lifted into the air. It only flew for a few seconds, just a little hop, but it was magic. It was the very first time a machine like it had ever, ever flown.

That first little flight was a very big deal. It showed everyone that flying was possible. From that one little hop, people learned how to build bigger and better airplanes. Now, giant airplanes can fly all over the world. They carry people on big adventures, soaring over tall mountains and deep blue oceans. Thanks to the airplane, you can visit family who live far away or see amazing new places. The airplane helps bring people all over our big, wide world closer together, all because two brothers dared to dream of flying like the birds.
