The Story of the Puffing Steam Engine
Have you ever seen a big, strong train chugging down the tracks? It goes huff-puff and chuff-chuff, with big white clouds of steam. This is the story of a very special invention, the amazing Steam Engine. Long, long ago, before these big engines, people and animals had to do all the heavy work. They had to push and pull and carry everything. It was very slow, and it made everyone so tired. But then, a brand new helper was imagined, one that could do all the big jobs with just a puff of steam.
A clever man named James Watt lived a long time ago. One day, James was watching a teapot boiling on the warm fire. The water inside got very, very hot and turned into puffy steam. The steam pushed and pushed until the little lid on the teapot started to jiggle and jump. Boing, boing, jiggle, jump. James watched the tiny lid dance and thought, 'Wow. That steam is strong.'. This gave him a super-duper idea. What if that puffy steam could push and pull something much, much bigger than a tiny teapot lid?
So, James Watt worked very hard to build a big, strong engine. He used the power of the puffy steam to make its wheels turn and its big arms move. Chugga-chugga, round and round. Soon, his steam engine was strong enough to power big machines in factories. The most exciting thing it could do was pull long, long trains on shiny tracks. Choo-choo. The steam engine could take people to visit faraway places. It could bring yummy foods and fun toys to little boys and girls. The big idea from a little teapot helped the whole world, and it still helps us make power today.
