The Wind Turbine's Windy Tale
Hello. I am a Wind Turbine. I am very tall and I love the wind. The wind is my best friend. I have long, long arms that reach for the sky. Swish, swoosh. I love to spin my arms around and around, just like a giant pinwheel. When I spin, I catch the wind’s energy. It’s like a big, windy hug. I turn that hug into power for your home. This power makes your lights shine bright and your TVs turn on. I feel so happy when I help you play.
My great-great-grandparents were called windmills. A long, long time ago, they helped people, too. They used their big, strong arms to grind yummy flour for baking warm, delicious bread. They helped farmers make food for everyone to eat, which made them feel very proud. But then, a very clever man named Charles F. Brush had a wonderful new idea. In the summer of 1888, he built my very first electric ancestor right in his big backyard. It was so special and exciting. It stood tall and spun and spun in the breeze, and it made enough power to light up his whole house. All the lamps inside glowed with bright, happy wind power. It was like magic.
Today, I have lots of friends just like me. We stand together in big, open fields called wind farms. We all spin together. Whoosh, whoosh, whoosh. When we spin, we make lots and lots of electricity. The best part is, we do it without making the air yucky or dirty. We are clean helpers. I love my job. I love to spin and dance with the wind. It makes me feel proud to help keep our world healthy and bright for you and all your friends.
