Chang'e and the Moon - Chinese

Hello, my name is Chang'e. A long, long time ago, I lived on a beautiful, green Earth. The sun was so warm, and the grass was very soft. I lived there with my husband, a very brave hero named Hou Yi. He had a big, kind heart and always helped everyone. Because he was so good, the wonderful Queen of Heaven gave him a special gift from the sky. It was a little bottle with a sweet, glowing drink inside. This drink was pure magic. It would let someone live forever and ever. We were so happy and kept the gift safe. This is the story of Chang'e and the Moon.

One sunny day, my dear Hou Yi was away from home. A greedy person came to our house and tried to steal our special drink. Oh no. I knew I had to keep the magic safe. I had to protect it. So, I picked up the bottle and drank it all myself. Gulp, gulp, gulp. Suddenly, I felt very funny. I felt as light as a fluffy cloud. I felt as light as a feather. My feet lifted right off the ground. I started to float up, up, up. I floated past the sleepy little birds and the pretty, twinkling stars, all the way to the big, bright moon.

I landed so gently on the silvery moon. It was quiet and calm. On the moon, I met a new friend. He was a little Jade Rabbit who keeps me company. He is very kind. Now, I am the lady of the moon, and my home is in the stars. From up here, I can watch over everyone on the warm Earth below. Every year, during the Mid-Autumn Festival on the 15th day of the 8th month, families gather together. They eat sweet, round mooncakes and look up at my glowing home. They remember my story. It reminds them that even when people are far apart, the same big moon shines down on them all, connecting their hearts. This story helps us all wonder about the magic in the beautiful night sky.
