The Emperor's New Clothes
In a big, busy town, there lived an emperor who loved new clothes more than anything. This emperor loved bright colors and fancy coats, and one day two silly weavers came with a secret in a story called The Emperor’s New Clothes. They told the emperor they could make the most wonderful clothes in the whole world. The clothes were magic! The weavers said only very smart people could see the beautiful cloth. The emperor clapped his hands with joy. He gave the weavers a big bag of shiny gold coins so they could start making his new, magical clothes right away.
So the weavers took out their big, tall looms and pretended to work. Swish, swoosh went their hands in the air, but they did not use any thread at all! When the emperor's helper came to see the clothes, his eyes grew wide. He could not see anything! But he did not want to seem silly, so he said, “Oh, it is so beautiful!” The emperor came to see, too. He stared and stared, but he also saw nothing at all! He pretended just like his helper and said, “Wonderful!” Soon, it was time for a big parade to show off the amazing clothes. The emperor walked proudly down the street in his new clothes. But he was not wearing anything! All the grown-ups clapped and cheered, pretending they could see the clothes because no one wanted to look silly.
A little child was watching the parade with big, curious eyes. He looked at the emperor, and he did not see any magic clothes. He saw only the emperor! The child pointed a tiny finger and shouted in a big, clear voice, “But he hasn’t got anything on!” Everyone went quiet. Then, one person started to giggle. Then another started to laugh! Soon, the whole town was laughing because they all knew the child was telling the truth. The emperor felt very, very silly, but he kept marching with his head held high. And everyone learned that it is always brave and good to tell the truth, just like the little child did.
