The Story of the Empty Pot
Hello, my name is Ping, and long ago in China, I lived in a beautiful land ruled by an Emperor who loved flowers more than anything. Our whole country was like a giant garden! I loved gardening too, and anything I planted would burst into colorful blooms, from bright red peonies to sunny yellow chrysanthemums. My little garden was my pride and joy. One day, the Emperor, who was very old, announced a special contest to choose the next ruler. This amazing challenge would become the story of The Empty Pot.
The Emperor gave one special seed to every child in the kingdom. His voice was old but strong as he announced, 'Whoever can show me their best in one year’s time shall succeed me to the throne!' My heart thumped like a drum. I was so excited! I was sure I could grow the most beautiful flower of all. I clutched the tiny seed in my hand and rushed home, already dreaming of the magnificent blossom it would become. I carefully planted my seed in a fine blue pot with rich, dark soil that I knew flowers loved.
I watered my seed every single day and made sure it had plenty of warm sunshine. But nothing happened. Days turned into weeks, and weeks turned into months, and still, not even a tiny green sprout poked its head through the soil. I started to worry. I carefully moved my seed to a bigger pot with even better soil, hoping that would help. It didn't. All the other children in the village chattered excitedly about their amazing plants with big, glossy leaves and bright, colorful flowers. Their stories made my stomach feel all twisty inside. I felt so sad and ashamed that my seed wouldn't grow. I thought I had failed.
When the year was finally over, it was time for all the children to go to the palace and show the Emperor their flowers. I wanted to hide. How could I go with nothing but a pot of dirt? My father saw my tears and his eyes were kind. He put his hand on my shoulder and told me, 'Ping, you did your best, and your best is enough. You must go to the Emperor and show him your empty pot. Honesty is a great treasure.' So, with a heavy heart, I picked up my empty pot and walked through the crowded streets. Everyone else had carts filled with the most incredible flowers I had ever seen. I felt so small standing among them.
The Emperor walked slowly through the crowd, looking at all the amazing flowers, but he did not smile. His face was serious. Then, he saw me hiding in the back, clutching my empty pot. He stopped right in front of me and asked why my pot was empty. With a shaky voice, I told him the truth. 'I tried my very best, Your Majesty, but the seed would not grow.' Suddenly, the Emperor's serious face broke into a wide, happy smile. He raised my arm and announced to everyone, 'I have found my successor! The seeds I gave you were all cooked, so they could not possibly grow. I admire this boy’s courage and honesty to bring me an empty pot!' I, Ping, was chosen to be the next Emperor. This story reminds us that being honest is more important than winning. For generations, this tale has inspired children to have the courage to tell the truth, and it shows that true greatness grows from an honest heart.
