The Pied Piper of Hamelin
In a little town called Hamelin, there was a big, squeaky problem. The town was full of rats. There were big rats and tiny rats. They ran on the rooftops and nibbled all the bread. Squeak, squeak, squeak. The grown-ups did not know what to do. This is the famous story of The Pied Piper of Hamelin.
One day, a tall man walked into town. He wore a very colorful coat and carried a shiny pipe. He told the mayor, “I can make the rats go away for a bag of gold.” The mayor said, “Yes, yes, please do.” So the Piper played a magical song on his pipe. It was a twirly, whirly tune. All the rats stopped and listened. They followed the music. The Piper led them all away to the river, and they disappeared. But the mayor did not keep his promise. He did not give the Piper the gold. This made the Piper very sad.
The Piper lifted his pipe again. He played a new song. This song was happy and sounded like sunshine. It was a dancing song. All the children in Hamelin heard the music. They laughed and started to dance. They followed the Piper in a happy parade. He led them to a big green mountain. A secret door opened in the mountain. All the children skipped inside to a new land full of flowers and fun. The story of the Piper reminds everyone that it is very important to always keep your promises.
