A Story from the Land of the Rising Sun

I am a long chain of islands, stretching like a green ribbon in the great blue ocean. My mountains wear caps of snow, and in the spring, my hills and parks are covered in fluffy pink clouds of cherry blossoms. People from all over the world come to visit my quiet gardens. They walk on little stone paths, listen to the gentle splash of waterfalls into peaceful ponds, and feel calm. But I am also a place of great excitement. In my cities, bright lights twinkle like a million stars at night, and tall buildings reach for the sky. I am a place where the new and the ancient live side-by-side, where you can see a peaceful temple one moment and a speeding train the next. I am Japan, the Land of the Rising Sun.

My story is very, very old, starting long before anyone can remember. The first people here, known as the Jomon, were amazing artists who made beautiful clay pots with swirling patterns that looked like ocean waves. For many centuries after them, I was home to brave warriors called samurai. They wore special armor to protect themselves and followed a code of honor that was very important to them. “Be brave, be loyal, be kind,” they would say. You can still see the amazing castles they protected, with swooping roofs that look like graceful birds about to take flight. For a long, long time, starting on March 24th, 1603, powerful leaders called shoguns ruled over me. They kept me safe and peaceful, which allowed my people to create beautiful art, like paintings on long scrolls and colorful woodblock prints that showed stories of heroes and beautiful landscapes.

Today, I am a place of incredible inventions. I wanted to help people travel very quickly from one city to another. So, on October 1st, 1964, my first super-fast bullet train, the Shinkansen, zipped between my cities. They still do today, looking like sleek white dragons racing across the land. My cities are filled with amazing technology, fun video games that children all over the world love, and colorful cartoons called anime. But even with all these new things, I still cherish my old ways. I love watching children carefully fold paper into amazing shapes, an art called origami. I love sharing my delicious food, like fresh sushi and warm bowls of ramen noodles. I love being a bridge between the past and the future, and I am always excited to share my stories, my art, and my friendly spirit with everyone who visits.
