The Whispering Jungle Cities

Deep in a warm, green jungle, the sun peeks through the leaves. Monkeys chatter and colorful birds sing in the tall, tall trees. Can you see me. I have big stone buildings that reach for the sky like giant steps. For a long, long time, I was a secret, hidden by the green leaves. I am the home of the Maya people, a world of amazing cities called the Maya Civilization. I am happy you found me.

I was built by the Maya people a long, long time ago, starting way back around the year 2000 BCE. They were so clever. They built my tall pyramids stone by stone, like stacking big, heavy blocks, all without big machines. The Maya people were wonderful farmers, too. They grew yummy corn to make their food, and they loved their families very much. At night, they would look up at the twinkling stars. They watched the moon and the sun to make a special calendar. This calendar helped them know the best time to plant their corn so it would grow big and strong.

Today, my big cities are quiet. The sounds of families are gone, but I am not empty. I am full of stories and secrets. People from all over the world come to visit me. They walk up my big stone steps and look at the beautiful pictures carved on my walls. They love to learn about the clever Maya people. I am here to share the secrets of the past and to show everyone how wonderful it is to build big things, to learn from the stars, and to always be curious.
