The Stone Cities That Talk to the Stars
I sleep under a blanket of green leaves, where monkeys chatter and colorful birds fly. For a very long time, I was a secret hidden deep in the rainforest. My heart is made of stone, carved into tall pyramids that peek above the trees like giant mountains. Can you imagine finding a whole city sleeping in the jungle? People who found me whispered in wonder, “Who could have built such amazing places?”. They saw my wide plazas where people once gathered and my tall temples reaching for the sun. I am the Maya Civilization, and I am so happy to wake up and tell you my story.
My people were brilliant builders, thinkers, and artists. Long, long ago, starting around the year 2000 BCE, they began building villages that grew into huge, bustling cities with names like Tikal and Chichen Itza. They didn't have big machines or cranes, but they built my tall temples to be closer to the sky. Do you know why? It’s because they loved to study the stars. They were amazing astronomers who created very clever calendars to track the sun, moon, and planets. They even had a special idea in math—a symbol for zero. This was a super-smart invention that helped them count huge numbers. My people also had their own way of writing using beautiful pictures called hieroglyphs. They carved their stories into my stone walls and wrote them in books made from tree bark, telling tales of brave kings, wise queens, and their beliefs about the world.
My story did not end when my cities grew quiet. Around the year 900 CE, many of my big cities in the southern lowlands were slowly emptied, and the jungle grew back around them like a big, green hug. But the Maya people didn't disappear. That would be a very sad ending, and mine is a happy one. Today, millions of their descendants live in the same lands. They still speak Maya languages, weave clothes with patterns as bright as jungle flowers, and share the ancient stories of their ancestors. My stone cities are now visited by people from all over the world. They come to see my pyramids and feel the cleverness of my people. I am a reminder that great ideas and beautiful creations can last for thousands of years, inspiring everyone to learn, build, and dream as big as the sky.
