The Big, Round Friend in Rome
Hello there. I am a very big, round building in a sunny, happy city. I have so many windows, but they are not made of glass. They are big, open arches that let the sunshine in. All day long, I feel the warm sun on my stones and it makes me feel cozy. I can hear children laughing and birds singing all around me. I stand tall and watch the world go by. Can you guess who I am. I am a place of wonder and stories. I am the Colosseum. It is so nice to meet you.
My story begins a very, very long time ago. In the year 72, a kind emperor named Vespasian wanted to give a special gift to all the people in his city, Rome. That gift was me. Thousands of friendly people worked together like a big team to build me. They stacked my giant stones one by one, like you stack your building blocks. They made all of my lovely arches, round and round I went. When I was finished, I was a happy place for exciting shows, parades, and fun celebrations. People would come to visit and fill my seats. They would clap and cheer and laugh together. I loved hearing their happy sounds.
I have been standing here for a very long time, so some of my stones have fallen down and I have some broken parts. But that is okay. I am still standing strong and proud. Today, friends from all over the world come to visit me in my sunny city. They smile when they see how big I am. I love sharing my stories with everyone who comes to see me. I am here to remind you that when people work together as a team, they can build amazing and wonderful things that last for a long, long time.
