The Parthenon's Sunny Crown
I stand on a big, sunny hill. My walls are made of shiny white stone that glows in the sunshine. From far away, I look like a crown for the city sleeping down below. Can you see me shining? I watch the little boats in the blue sea and the busy people in the town. I love it when the sun warms my stones. Hello, little friend. Can you see me sitting on my hill?
I am the Parthenon. A long, long, long time ago, the people of a city called Athens built me. It was in the year 447 BCE. They wanted to build a special and beautiful home for a hero they loved. Her name was Athena, and they believed she was very strong and wise. They worked together, like a big family, to build me. They carried big blocks of marble stone up my hill. It was like stacking giant, shiny building blocks, one by one, very carefully. They carved pictures into my walls, telling happy stories of heroes and friendly animals. They made me with so much love.
Inside my strong walls, there was a wonderful surprise. A giant, sparkling statue of Athena stood tall and proud. She was covered in gold and shone like the brightest star. I was a happy place, full of sunshine and stories. I felt so proud when people came to visit. I loved hearing their happy voices and the pitter-patter of little feet. I was the most special building in the whole city, and I kept everyone’s stories safe inside my heart.
Now, I am very, very old. Some of my stones have moved, and my roof is open to the big blue sky. But I am still standing tall and strong. Friends from all over the world climb my hill to say hello. I love sharing my sunshine and my stories with them. I am here to remind you that when we work together with our friends, we can build beautiful dreams that last forever.
