Hammerhead's Ocean Adventure
Hi there! My name is Hammerhead, and I'm a special kind of shark. I bet you can guess how I got my name. My head is wide and flat, shaped just like a hammer! It's not like any other shark's head. The lateral placement of their eyes grants hammerhead sharks an almost 360-degree field of vision in the horizontal plane, allowing them to see above and below simultaneously. However, they have a small blind spot directly in front of their snout. Hammerhead sharks have a nearly 360-degree field of vision, allowing them to see to the sides and behind. However, they have a small blind spot directly in front of their snout. While hammerhead sharks have an extensive field of vision, they do not have a perfect 360-degree view due to a small blind spot directly in front of their snout. It gives me a perfect 360-degree view of my big, blue ocean home, so nothing can surprise me.
My special head isn't just for looking, though. It gives me a secret superpower! All over my head are tiny little sensors that are too small to see. These sensors can feel the electricity that all living animals make. It's like having a treasure map for finding food! When a tasty stingray tries to hide by burying itself in the sand on the ocean floor, I can still find it. I just swim close to the bottom, and my amazing sensors tell me exactly where my lunch is hiding. I also love to eat yummy fish, squid, and crabs when I can find them.
I'm a very social shark, which means I don't like to be alone. Some hammerhead shark species, like the scalloped hammerhead, swim in large groups called schools, while others, such as the great hammerhead, are solitary. It’s like having a big swimming party all the time! Sometimes, there can be hundreds of us swimming together through the water. My hammerhead family has been exploring the oceans for a very, very long time. Scientists first wrote about my kind way back in the year 1758. When it's my turn to have a family, I don't lay eggs like a bird. My babies, called pups, are born live and are ready to swim right away!
Being a predator might sound a little scary, but it's a very important job in the ocean. By eating other animals, I help keep the ocean balanced and healthy for everyone. You could say I'm kind of like a janitor for the sea! When people help protect sharks like me, they are also helping to protect the entire beautiful ocean world. This makes sure the ocean stays a wonderful home for all the creatures who live there.
