An Orca's Ocean Song
Hi there! My name is Orca, but some people call me a Killer Whale. I'm not a whale, though—I'm actually the biggest dolphin in the world! I want to tell you my story. I was born in the cool, sparkling ocean, and the first thing I did was swim to the surface with my mom to take my first breath of fresh air. It felt wonderful. My family, which is called a pod, was all around me. I could hear them clicking and whistling hello, and I knew I was safe and loved. We swam together as one big, happy family, and my amazing ocean adventure began right at that moment. I couldn't wait to explore my huge, blue home with them by my side.
I live with my whole family—my mom, my grandma, my aunts, and all my cousins. We do everything together! My grandma is the wisest and leads our pod. She is our teacher, and she shows us the best places to find yummy fish, like salmon. We all speak a special language of clicks, whistles, and calls; each pod has its own unique dialect, understood by members of their ecotype. It’s like our own secret code! We use it to talk to each other while we hunt and play, so we always know what the others are doing. We hunt as a team, using clever tricks to catch our food. It’s one of the most important things we have learned. This skill has been passed down for generations since people first wrote about my kind way back in the year 70.
As an apex predator, I'm at the very top of the food chain, which is a big responsibility. It’s my job to help keep the ocean healthy and balanced. By hunting, I make sure that no single type of animal becomes too numerous, which helps all the other plants and animals in the sea. But our life isn't always easy. Sometimes it's hard to find enough fish to eat, and our ocean home can get noisy from boats, which makes it hard for us to talk to each other. In 2005, people noticed that some of my relatives, the Southern Resident killer whales, needed extra help. They were listed as endangered to protect them from harm. It reminds us all how important it is to take care of the ocean for everyone who lives here.
My story is still being written every day in the waves. My pod and I will keep swimming through the vast blue world, singing our family songs and teaching the little ones how to be strong and smart. We are intelligent, powerful, and a very important part of the ocean's big family. We have a special job to do, and we do it with pride. By keeping our ocean home clean and safe, you help us continue to thrive and share our songs with the world. My song is one of the ocean's most beautiful sounds, and I hope it plays on forever.
