Hello! My name is Ignacy Łukasiewicz. When I was a boy, I loved learning. I became a pharmacist, which is like a scientist who helps people feel better. I loved my job in a shop filled with colorful bottles, where I could mix and measure things all day to create medicines.
One day in the year 1852, I learned about a sticky, black goo that came from the ground. People called it rock oil. It smelled funny and did not seem very useful, but I was curious. I thought, 'What if I could turn this goo into something helpful?'. I took it back to my pharmacy and began to experiment. I heated it and cleaned it very carefully. I discovered something amazing. It was a clear liquid that could be used to make a bright, steady light.
Now that I had my special liquid, which I called kerosene, I needed a safe way to burn it. In 1853, I worked with my friend Jan Zeh to invent the very first kerosene lamp. It was a special lantern that could light up a whole room. On July 31st, 1853, a doctor used my lamp to do surgery at night for the first time ever, helping to save someone's life. My lamp made the dark nights much less scary and helped people see.
I loved helping people and bringing light into their homes. I lived to be 59 years old. Today, people remember me for inventing the kerosene lamp and for starting the oil industry, which changed the way we light our world.

About
Ignacy Łukasiewicz was a Polish pharmacist, inventor, and philanthropist who is credited with inventing the modern kerosene lamp in 1853 and being the pioneer of the world's petroleum industry. It's interesting to know that an American named Samuel Martin Kier also made a similar kerosene lamp around the same time. Ignacy's lamp used kerosene, which is made from crude oil, to create a better and safer way to light up homes compared to the old oil lamps.
