Just want Ramkhamhaeng the Great?
Hello. My name is Ramkhamhaeng. My name means ‘Rama the Bold.’ I was a king a very, very long time ago, back in the 1200s. I lived in a beautiful place called the Sukhothai Kingdom. When I was a boy, I loved my family and all of the people in my kingdom. I knew that one day, I wanted to be a good and strong leader to help everyone.
When I became king, I wanted to make sure everyone was happy and felt safe. I put a special bell just outside my palace. If anyone had a problem or needed my help, they could come and ring the bell. I would hear its sound and come right out to listen to them. I wanted my people to share their stories, too. So, in the year 1292, I helped create a new way to write our words. These were our very own special letters, the first Thai alphabet.
I worked very hard to make my kingdom a peaceful and happy home for everyone. I made sure there was plenty of yummy food. There were fish swimming in the water and lots of rice growing in the big green fields. I lived a long life helping my kingdom grow and was king until around the year 1298. Today, people in the country of Thailand still remember me. They remember the alphabet I helped create and how I always listened to my people with a kind heart.
