Hello, I'm Roberto Clemente. I was born on a beautiful island called Puerto Rico on August 18th, 1934. I grew up in a big, happy family and was the youngest of seven children. From the time I was very little, my biggest love was the game of baseball. I would spend hours and hours outside, throwing, catching, and hitting anything I could find. It was my favorite thing in the world to do, and I dreamed that one day I would play for a real team.
My big dream came true in 1955 when I joined a major league baseball team called the Pittsburgh Pirates. It was so exciting to play in giant stadiums filled with cheering fans. I worked very hard to be the best player I could be. People said I had a very strong throwing arm, and when I swung my bat, I could hit the ball far. I was so proud to be a part of the team. One of my happiest moments was when I helped my team win the World Series championship. It felt amazing to celebrate with my teammates and the city of Pittsburgh.
Being a famous baseball player was wonderful, but I believed that something else was even more important: helping people. I always thought that if you have a chance to help someone, you should always do it. So, when I wasn't playing baseball, I spent my time working to help others. I wanted to make sure people had what they needed to be happy and healthy. I helped bring food and supplies to communities, and I even started baseball clinics to teach kids how to play the game I loved, especially in Latin American countries.

My story has a sad part at the end. In 1972, a big earthquake happened in a country called Nicaragua, and many people needed help. I wanted to make sure they got the supplies they needed, so I got on a plane on December 31st to deliver them myself. But the plane had an accident. I lived to be 38 years old. Today, I am remembered for being a great baseball player who got his 3,000th hit, but I hope I am remembered more as someone who cared deeply for others. Major League Baseball even gives a special award in my name to players who also love to help their communities.
