Sacagawea: A Brave Helper
Hello. My name is Sacagawea. I am from the Shoshone people. I loved my home in the big mountains and near the rushing rivers. I loved to play outside and learn about all the plants. A long time ago, when I was a young girl, something sad happened. I had to leave my family and my home. I went to live in a new village with new people. It was different, but I was brave. I learned many new things and I always remembered the mountains I loved so much.
One day, two new friends came to my village. Their names were Lewis and Clark. It was the winter of 1804. They were on a big, big adventure to see the giant water far away. They asked me and my husband to help them. I said yes. I was so excited to go on a journey. I even brought my baby boy with me. His name was Jean Baptiste, and I carried him in a cozy cradle on my back. We walked and walked. I helped my new friends find yummy berries and roots to eat. When we met new people, I would talk to them and say, “We are friends.” This made everyone feel safe and happy. It was a very long trip, but we helped each other every day.
We walked for a long, long time. We crossed rivers and climbed hills. And then, one day, we saw it. The big, big water. It was the Pacific Ocean. It was so big it looked like it never ended. We were so happy. We did it. We made it all the way to the giant water. After our big celebration, we had to walk all the way back home. We finished our trip on September 23rd, 1806. I was so proud I could help my friends, Lewis and Clark. I am happy that people remember me as a brave and kind helper. It is always good to be a good friend and to be brave on a big adventure.
