The Great Big Game of Sharing

Have you ever watched your parents go to work in the morning? They might be a doctor helping people feel better, a builder making tall buildings, or a teacher sharing amazing stories. Have you seen a baker, with flour on their nose, pulling warm, yummy-smelling bread out of an oven for everyone in town? Or maybe you’ve traded your sparkly blue sticker for your friend’s super-fast race car sticker. All day long, all around the world, people are making things, doing jobs, and sharing with one another. It’s like a giant game where everyone has a special part to play, helping each other get the things they need and want. It’s a busy, wonderful dance of giving and getting, buying and selling, working and playing. Guess what? That big, busy, wonderful game of sharing is me. I am the Economy.

A long, long time ago, before I had a name, things were a little tricky. If you were a farmer who had lots of chickens but needed new shoes, you had to find a shoemaker who wanted chickens. You might have to trade three clucking chickens just for one pair of shoes. That’s called bartering, and it could get very noisy and messy. Imagine trying to carry chickens to the market. So, people came up with a brilliant idea: money. Suddenly, you could sell your chickens for coins and use those coins to buy anything you wanted. It was so much easier. Then, a very clever man who was like a detective for me came along. His name was Adam Smith. He watched how people bought, sold, and traded, and he wrote all his ideas down in a big book on March 9th, 1776. He explained that I work best when everyone does the job they are really good at. A great baker should bake bread, and a great farmer should grow food. He said it was like an 'invisible hand' was gently guiding everyone to help each other, making sure everyone got what they needed, even without a big boss telling them what to do.

You are a part of my story every single day. When you get an allowance and save it in your piggy bank for a special toy, that’s me. When your family goes to the grocery store and decides to buy apples instead of bananas, that’s me, too. I am there in the big choices, like when your town decides to build a brand new school or a fun playground for everyone to share. And I’m there in the small, happy choices, like when you pick out the perfect birthday card for your best friend. Every time you share, save, or choose something, you are playing your part in my big, exciting game. I am all about people helping each other, sharing their amazing talents, and working together to build a happier, better world for everyone. And you have a very important part to play in my story.
