I am the warm sunshine that tickles your face and helps the flowers grow. Have you ever wondered where everything comes from? Look around. I am in the fuel that powers your family's car and the shiny metals inside your phone that let you talk to friends. I have been here since the Earth was a swirling, young planet, long before the first person ever walked upon it. I hide deep in the ground as sparkling gems and flow in mighty rivers that carve through mountains. I am the very air you breathe and the rich soil under your feet. I am a world of gifts, waiting to be discovered and used. Can you guess who I am? I am Natural Resources!

Our story together, yours and mine, is a very long and exciting one. It began hundreds of thousands of years ago during a time you call the Stone Age. Early people were clever and observant. They saw me lying on the ground, in the form of a hard, gray stone called flint, and realized I could be useful. With great patience, they chipped away at me, shaping me into sharp spearheads for hunting and sturdy axes for cutting wood. These simple tools, made from me, were the very first inventions that helped them survive and build their world. For thousands and thousands of years, that was how we worked together. Then, a huge change happened around 10,000 BCE. You call it the Agricultural Revolution. People learned that my soil was not just dirt; it was full of life. They discovered that if they planted tiny seeds and gave them my fresh water and my warm sunshine, they could grow their own food. Can you imagine a world without farming? Before this, people had to constantly search for food, but now they could build villages and stay in one place. Our partnership grew much deeper. Great civilizations sprouted up, like in ancient Egypt around 3100 BCE. The people there built their entire world around my gifts. My mighty Nile River flooded its banks each year, leaving behind rich, dark mud that was perfect for growing crops. They also cut my strong stone into giant blocks to build the incredible pyramids that still touch the sky today. For centuries, our partnership was powered by the strength of people and animals, and the force of my wind and water. But then came the Industrial Revolution in the 18th century, and everything changed. People dug deep into the earth and found a new, secret power I had been hiding: black, rocky coal. A clever inventor named James Watt perfected a steam engine around 1776 CE that could burn my coal to create powerful steam. Suddenly, machines could do the work of a hundred people. Factories filled with noisy, wonderful new inventions, and roaring trains powered by my steam crisscrossed the land, connecting cities like never before. The world began to move faster and faster. Not long after, another one of my secret powers was found. On January 10th, 1901, a huge gusher of oil erupted from a well called Spindletop in Texas, shooting high into the air. This black, liquid energy would soon power the first cars, trucks, and even airplanes, changing how everyone lived, worked, and traveled in ways they had never dreamed of.

Our long journey together has been incredible, but using so much of me so quickly created some big challenges. The smoke from burning my coal and oil for all those factories and cars created pollution that dirtied the air and made the water unsafe. People also started to understand that some of my most powerful gifts, like coal and oil, are 'non-renewable.' That’s a big word that means I can't make more of them quickly. Once they are all used up, they could be gone for millions of years. A new way of thinking was needed, a smarter way for us to be partners. On April 22nd, 1970, millions of people all over the world celebrated the very first Earth Day. It was a day to make a promise to take better care of me and our beautiful planet. That’s when our partnership started to evolve and get smarter. People began to look for my other gifts, the 'renewable' ones that never run out. Have you felt them? I am the powerful wind that can turn giant, graceful turbines to make clean electricity. I am the bright sun, a star so full of energy that its rays can be captured by solar panels to power entire homes. I am the rushing water in rivers that can spin generators inside massive dams.
