My story is very, very old, from long before computers were even a dream. Thousands of years ago, in a place called Ancient Rome, soldiers stood guard at their forts all through the dark night. They needed a way to tell if a person walking towards them was a friend or an enemy. They used me. A soldier would whisper a secret 'watchword' to the guard. If they knew the right word, the heavy gate would swing open and they would be safe inside. For centuries and centuries, I helped soldiers, spies, and even kings keep their biggest secrets safe from the world. Then, a whole new world was invented, a world of blinking lights and clicking keyboards, the world of computers. In 1961, a very clever scientist named Fernando J. Corbató and his team at a university called MIT were working with a giant computer that filled a whole room. Many people needed to use it, but they all wanted to keep their special work private. So, they gave me a brand new job. I became the first computer password, a secret code that each person typed to unlock their own special part of the computer.

Today, I am everywhere.
