A Story in a Line

Hello. I have a secret. I hold all the stories of the world, from the very first sunrise to the yummy snack you ate today. I’m like a long, long piece of string that connects everything that has ever happened. Before people knew about me, stories were all jumbled up, like puzzle pieces scattered on the floor. It was tricky to know what came first. Did the big, stompy dinosaurs live at the same time as the brave knights in shiny armor? I help you find out. I put everything in its proper place, so the story of the world makes sense. What am I? I am a Timeline.

For a very long time, people told stories to remember the past. They would draw pictures on cave walls or sing songs about great adventures. But as more and more things happened, it got harder to keep track. Then, people got really clever. They invented calendars to count the days and clocks to count the hours. This helped them organize their stories. A very smart man named Joseph Priestley, who lived hundreds of years ago, had a wonderful idea. On a day in 1765, he published a big chart called 'A Chart of Biography.' He drew me as a long line and put little marks on me for different years. He showed when famous people were born and when they died. Suddenly, it was easy to see who lived at the same time. People could see how one person's story might have touched another's. From then on, people used me to tell all kinds of stories, from the history of giant empires to the story of a tiny seed growing into a tall tree.

Today, I am everywhere. You see me in your schoolbooks, showing when castles were built or when amazing inventions were created. You might even make a timeline for a project, with pictures of you as a baby on your 1st birthday, your first day of school, and the day you learned to ride your bike. I help you see how all those little moments connect to make the wonderful story of YOU. I am a map of time. I show you where we've all been and help you imagine all the amazing places you can go. Every day, you add a new little mark to your own timeline, and that is a story worth telling.
