Hello there! Do you have a secret? I have lots of them! One minute, I might be the number of bright, shiny apples in a bowl. But then, if you eat one for a snack—poof!—I change. Now I’m a different number! I’m like a mystery box or a dress-up chest. You never know what I’ll be next. I can be the number of steps you take to your front door, or the number of giggles you share with a friend. I love to change and keep you guessing. My name is Variable, and I’m here to make things exciting!

For a very long time, people saw me everywhere but didn't know what to call me. They knew the number of sunny days could change, and the number of flowers in a garden could change, too. Then, a super smart man named François Viète had a wonderful idea. Around a new year, on January 1st, 1591, he shared his big thought with the world. He decided to use letters from the alphabet, like 'x' or 'a,' to be my special nickname. It was like a game of hide-and-seek! When they wrote 'x + 2 = 5,' they were really asking, 'Hey Variable, what number are you hiding as today?' This made solving math puzzles feel like a fun adventure.

Now, I am your busy helper all day long! When you play a video game, I am the score that keeps climbing higher. When your mommy or daddy bakes cookies, I am the temperature on the oven that they set just right. I am even in the storybooks you read, as the page number changes one by one.
