The story

The Story of Oliver Twist

Imagine a world held between two covers, a world filled with the gloomy fog and clattering sounds of a big city long, long ago. In my pages, you can hear the rumble of carriage wheels on cobblestones and the shouts of vendors selling pies and apples on the street. It’s a busy, bustling place, but if you listen very closely, you can also hear the quiet plea of a small, lonely boy with a very big heart. He has no family, no warm bed, and often, no food in his belly. I am a story about finding light in the darkest of places, a journey from a cold, lonely room to the warmth of a true family. Can you imagine having to be brave every single day, just to survive?. My story is about a boy who did just that. He was a brave young hero who dared to ask for something more from life, something better. I am his tale of adventure, sadness, and hope. My name is Oliver Twist.

I was brought to life by a very clever and observant man named Charles Dickens. He lived in London, England, during a time called the Victorian era. In the 1830s, he walked the city streets and saw things that made his heart ache. He saw children who were hungry, cold, and had nowhere to call home. He was especially troubled by a new rule called the Poor Law of 1834. This law forced people who had no money or jobs into grim, prison-like places called workhouses, where families were split up and life was terribly hard. Charles Dickens knew this was unfair, especially for children, and he wanted everyone else to know it, too. So, he decided to use his greatest tool—his imagination—to write a story that would open people’s eyes. He didn’t write me all at once as a single book. Instead, he released my story in little pieces, one chapter at a time, in a monthly magazine. The very first part appeared in February of 1837, and the final chapter was published in April of 1839. Every month, people all over England would wait eagerly to buy the magazine and find out what happened next to my young hero, Oliver.

My story follows young Oliver on his incredible, and often scary, adventure. I tell of his sad beginnings in the workhouse, where he gets into big trouble for making a famous request: ‘Please, sir, I want some more.’ After that, he runs away and begins a long, seventy-mile walk to the giant city of London, hoping to find a better life. But London is full of dangers. There, he meets a tricky boy nicknamed the Artful Dodger, who introduces him to a crafty old man named Fagin. Fagin leads a gang of boys and teaches them how to be pickpockets, stealing from wealthy people on the street. Through all these troubles and scary situations, Oliver never loses his kind and honest spirit. As people read my pages back in the 1830s, their hearts went out to Oliver. They felt sad for him and angry about the real children who were living just like him. My story made people talk and debate. I wasn’t just an adventure; I was like a mirror showing society a serious problem that it needed to look at and fix.

Many years have passed since Charles Dickens first dipped his pen in ink to write my words, but I am still shared and loved all over the world. My adventure has been turned into plays for the stage, movies for the big screen, and even a famous musical called ‘Oliver!’. You might have even heard some of its songs. People today still know the names of the Artful Dodger and the sneaky Fagin. And Oliver’s brave request for more food is still remembered as a powerful moment of standing up for what is right, even when you’re scared. I hope I continue to show readers that no matter how difficult or dark life can seem, there is always hope just around the corner. I am here to remind you that a little bit of kindness can change a whole story and that every single person deserves a chance at a happy ending.
