Lilly and the Rumbling Giant

My name is Lilly, and I lived in a cozy little cottage in the countryside with my Mama and Papa. Our world was very quiet. The only sounds I heard most days were the birds singing and the fluffy sheep saying “Baa!” in the green fields. I loved to play hide-and-seek in the tall grass and chase butterflies. I helped my family with our chores. I would help Papa carry buckets of water from the well, and I would watch Mama spin wool into yarn to make our warm clothes. Everything was done by hand, and life was simple and slow.

One morning, I saw something new in the big field near our home. Men were building a giant house, bigger than any building I had ever seen. It had a tall, tall chimney that reached for the clouds like a long finger. Soon, I heard a new sound, a loud and exciting sound. It went chugga-chugga-chugga, rumble-rumble-rumble. It was a big steam engine, and it puffed out fluffy white clouds of smoke. I wasn't scared at all. I was curious. I would peek from behind our garden wall and watch the giant building grow every day. It felt like a friendly giant was waking up from a long nap.

A World of Wonders
Soon, the giant building, which Papa called a factory, started making wonderful things. It made the softest, warmest blankets you could imagine, and it made them so fast. It made colorful toys that could spin and dance. Before, it took Mama a very long time to make just one thing. But the machines in the factory helped make lots of amazing things for everyone. Our little town grew bigger and busier. The rumbling giant showed us that big, new ideas could fill our world with beautiful new wonders for everyone to share.
