The story

I Am Naadam

Hello! I am Naadam. I am a big and happy festival in a country called Mongolia. My name means “games.” I happen in the summertime when the sun is warm and the fields are green. I am a special time for families and friends to come together. They gather to celebrate, have fun, and play my special games every year.

I am famous for my three wonderful games. These games show how strong and skilled people are. One of my games is wrestling. Strong wrestlers wear special outfits for this game. They try very hard to be the last one standing to win. Another one of my games is horse racing. Fast horses run in the races. Young riders guide the horses across the wide-open land. It is exciting to watch them go! My third game is archery. In archery, people use a bow. They shoot arrows from the bow. They aim carefully to hit targets that are far away.

People celebrate me in other fun ways, too. There are big parades to watch. The parades have happy music, and people love to dance. Many people wear beautiful clothes called a “deel.” A deel is a traditional coat with bright, lovely colors. People also eat special food during my celebration. One tasty food is called “khuushuur.” It is a yummy piece of fried dough that everyone enjoys. My games and celebrations are a happy time for all.
