Can Opener

Hello. I am the Can Opener. A long, long time ago, there was a big puzzle. All the yummy foods, like warm soup and sweet, juicy peaches, were hiding. They were locked away inside strong, shiny metal cans. No one knew how to get them out. People would try and try, but the cans were too strong. It was so tricky. How could anyone eat the yummy food inside without making a big, sticky mess? Everyone needed a helper to solve the tasty puzzle. I was so excited to help.

Then, a very clever man named Ezra Warner had a wonderful idea. He wanted to solve the puzzle. On July 5th, 1858, he made me. I was born. At first, I looked a little funny. I had a sharp part that could bite into the top of the can. It was a good start, but it was still hard work. Then, another smart friend named William Lyman made me even better. He gave me a special little wheel. My wheel could spin and spin all the way around the top of the can. It was like I was a tiny car driving on a round, shiny track. Click, whirr, spin. I loved to go around and around and help let all the good food out for everyone to enjoy.

Now, I am in kitchens all over the world. I love helping grown-ups get lunch ready. When it's time for a snack, they grab me. I hold on tight to the can. With a little twist, I go to work. Can you hear my special sound? First, there is a little pop. Then you hear me whirr as my little wheel spins around the track. That happy sound means a tasty meal is on its way.
